40 years ago, homosexuality was decriminalised in NSW. This year, Premier Chris Minns delivered a heartfelt apology to our community, beginning a new chapter in NSW's history. And while NSW also banned conversion practices this year, unfair laws continue to disadvantage our community. You can help to fix this. I urge you to support the NSW LGBTIQA+ Equality Bill and reform NSW laws to: - remove discriminatory provisions in NSW law, - allow trans and gender diverse people to update their ID without unnecessary barriers, such as the need for surgery, - give more rainbow families the dignity and security of legal recognition, - provide LGBTIQA+ people with better protections from unique forms of violence, including threats ‘out’ a person’s sexual orientation, gender history, HIV+ status or sex work; and - remove stigmatising language about HIV and AIDS from the law. I also urge you to follow through on reforms to protect LGBTQ+ teachers and staff in private schools from discrimination. NSW leaves LGBTIQ+ students and staff at private schools unprotected from discrimination, falling far behind the standards set in other states. This year NSW recognised the wrongs of the past with it’s historic apology to LGBTIQ+ people on the anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality, please make 2024 the year that NSW finally removes remaining discrimination facing LGBTIQ+ people in our law.
